A FTII student's film "Sunflowers were the first ones to know" was chosen for the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

The film "SUNFLOWERS WERE FIRST ONES TO KNOW," directed by Chidanand Naik, a student at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), has been chosen for the 77th Cannes Film Festival's "La Cinef" Competitive section. The event is scheduled on May 15, 2024, to May 24, 2024. This official part of the festival honors films from international film schools and is designed to support up-and-coming talent.

The movie is one of 18 shorts—14 live-action and 4 animated—that were chosen from 2,263 submissions made by film schools worldwide. This is the only Indian movie that has been chosen for Cannes' "La Cinef" section. The Buñuel Theatre will host a ceremony on May 23rd, before to the screening of the selected films, where the Jury will present the La Cinef awards.

The narrative of "SUNFLOWERS WERE FIRST ONES TO KNOW" centers on an elderly woman who robs the village's rooster, causing chaos across the town. A prophecy is fulfilled, driving the old lady's family into exile and bringing the rooster back.

For the first time, a student's film from a one-year television course has been chosen for the esteemed Cannes Film Festival.

Students and alumni of FTII have won awards in numerous National and International Film festivals over the years thanks to the Institute's distinctive pedagogy and emphasis on practice-based co-learning approaches to education in the field of Cinema and Television.

As a year-end coordinated exercise, four students from different disciplines—Direction, Electronic Cinematography, Editing, and Sound—worked together to produce this FTII short as part of the TV Wing One-year program. Chidananda S. Naik is the film's director; Suraj Thakur took the pictures; Manoj V edited it; and Abhishek Kadam handled the sound.
